The Lafayette Regional Institute in Lafayette, Louisiana offers a two-month
course instructing students in the same roughnecking basics. Their course is
entitled Petroleum
Rig Training and involves intense training in all phases of basic
roughnecking. Louisiana residents can attend the courses free. Accommodations

This organization offers two excellent types of courses for those interested
in obtaining Coast Guard endorsements and licenses, which are very helpful in
obtaining employment.
- Indoctrination Phase - provides a student with basic
deckhand training, including marine industry orientation, basic seamanship,
and basic engineering. It is a six-week course and during that time the
trainees will also obtain their seaman's papers if they have the
documentation required by the Coast Guard.
- The Core Program - is a two year comprehensive training
program that includes one year of formal training (1,365 hours) and one year
of on-the-job training along with formal training at the institute. It is
designed to help in obtaining endorsements for Master/Mate, Ocean Operator,
Assistant or Chief Engineer, Able Bodied Seaman, and Oiler.

seeking employment in the exploration, production, and refining of petroleum
products. The Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded upon satisfactory
