These schools and classes are ran by skilled, experienced professionals who know their stuff. AND don't forget that they will  have insider contacts as well as offer job placement assistance.

Lafayette Regional Institute

The Lafayette Regional Institute in Lafayette, Louisiana offers a two-month course instructing students in the same roughnecking basics. Their course is entitled Petroleum Rig Training and involves intense training in all phases of basic roughnecking. Louisiana residents can attend the courses free. Louisiana Marine & Petroleum Industry

This organization offers two excellent types of courses for those interested in obtaining Coast Guard endorsements and licenses, which are very helpful in obtaining employment.

  1. Indoctrination Phase - provides a student with basic deckhand training, including marine industry orientation, basic seamanship, and basic engineering. It is a six-week course and during that time the trainees will also obtain their seaman's papers if they have the documentation required by the Coast Guard.
  2. The Core Program - is a two year comprehensive training program that includes one year of formal training (1,365 hours) and one year of on-the-job training along with formal training at the institute. It is designed to help in obtaining endorsements for Master/Mate, Ocean Operator, Assistant or Chief Engineer, Able Bodied Seaman, and Oiler.

Nationally Accredited Colleges (general)

Because of the enormous number of people who work offshore, several colleges have provided special classes for the folds on a 7/7 day schedule. This allows offshore workers to further their education if they are so inclined.

Perkinston Junior College

This Mississippi junior college offers a two-year technical program for those seeking employment in the exploration, production, and refining of petroleum products. The Associate of Applied Science degree is awarded upon satisfactory completion of the course prescribed in the curriculum. Send inquires to:

Nicholls State University

This Louisiana college offers several petroleum related courses. After successful completion of the courses, an Associate of Science degree will be awarded either in Petroleum Services and/or Petroleum Safety. State Vocational Schools (general)

All states have some form of vocational schools or classes, either in the high school or college level. Many of them are open to the public in the form of night classes. Courses include auto and diesel mechanics, hydraulics, industrial electricity, welding, and fabrication and machine shop operation. Backgrounds in any of these fields will be helpful in obtaining offshore employment.
